According to a new report by Counterpoint Research, sales of the iPhone 12 series have crossed 100 million units in April this year. The new iPhone 12 range managed to touch the milestone within seven months of launch, while the iPhone 11 series did the same nine months after its launch.
As Apple fans know, the iPhone 6 represents a supercycle for iPhone sales, thanks to the larger form factor design and the iPhone 6 Plus. The iPhone 12, however, has been able to rival the iPhone 6 in terms of sales, thanks to an entirely new design, 5G, and a versatile line up of sizes and prices.
The chart below shows the launch months in which it took the iPhone 6, iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 lineups to cross the 100 million unit milestone. As you can see, the iPhone 12 crossed the same timeline as the iPhone 6, while the iPhone 11 is almost two months behind.
The market-tracking firm says the super-cycle has been achieved by the iPhone 12 series thanks to features like 5G, OLED display and all-time high average selling prices.
The firm also claims that the new iPhone 12 series managed to replicate the iPhone 6 series in 2014. At the time, the iPhone 6 saw a major design overhaul, and a surge in demand for larger-screen iPhones helped it reach the milestone. .
For comparison, the iPhone 12 series managed to touch the 100 million units mark in seven months, while the iPhone 11 achieved it in nine months.
The report also noted that there has been a significant change in model preference between 2019's iPhone 11 series and last year's iPhone 12 series. Counterpoint claims that consumers preferred the Pro and Pro Max models.
Apple doesn't report unit sales for any of its products, so we don't really know how many iPhones Apple has sold. That means we have to rely on data from research firms like Counterpoint, which base their findings on things like surveys, supply chain research and retail availability.
